It was essentially a drag act but also a double act. They were hugely successful at the time, playing music halls,He toured Ireland, where he met and subsequently married Kathleen "Kitty" McShane. Together they developed a double act - Old Mother Riley and her daughter Kitty. They achieved some success with a sketch called 'Bridget's Night Out'. FLASH GORDON 11 EPISODES DVD CLASSIC

Obviously, the first FLASH GORDON (1936) serial was sufficiently successful that Universal decided to make this 1938 followup.

As enjoyable as the first 13-chapters were, this 15-chapter opus is by far my favorite and I am not alone in feeling it is superior, making it one of the few film sequels to surpass the original.

As with the original, some of my favorite guilty pleasures are its innocence - its scientific naivete. But this time around, instead of the "monster of the week" that Flash had to grapple with in the original, the sequel is less episodic with more of a developing story, although during the last several chapters, it does run out of steam and seems a bit padded.

The Clay People make, first, good antagonists and, later, worthy allies, although their makeup and costumes are far from imaginative. There is just something simultaneously creepy and sad about them, and they made an indelible impression on me when I first saw this serial as a child on TV in the early 1950's.

The music featured is pretty much identical to that in the first serial but it seems to play a more important role, coming up louder at times of dramatic tension or during action scenes. (In addition to the music of Liszt and earlier Universal films, music from BOMBAY MAIL (1934), THE BLACK CAT (1934), BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), SUTTER'S GOLD (1936), DRACULA'S DAUGHTER (1936), DESTINATION UNKNOWN (1933) and Alexandre Iljinsky's ORGY OF THE SPIRITS was used.)  On the whole, this follow-up seems better photographed and directed than the first one, and this in all probability can be credited to co-director Ford Beebe who was a prolific director of B pictures and serials for Mascot, Columbia and Republic, including the BUCK ROGERS (1939) serial which also starred Buster Crabbe.

THE 39 STEPS

1935's The 39 Steps is the film that really put Alfred Hitchcock on the map as a world-class movie director. With its mixture of classic Hitchcockian wit, dark (and light) humor, and suspense, it brought to the fore the man's genius and set the stage for many a classic thriller to come. Robert Donat is excellent in the role of Richard Hannay, a young Canadian who finds himself in between a rock and a hard place after his encounter with a young female spy in London, while Madeleine Carroll brings beauty, grace, and a sense of romance to Hannay's increasingly harrowing quest to not only prove himself innocent of murder but to safeguard the defense of Great Britain from foreign agents. All he has to go on are a cryptic reference to something called "the 39 steps," a name of a town in Scotland, and a warning to stay away from any man missing the upper digit on his right pinkie finger.

THE THREE STOOGES 99 EPISODES DVD BOX SET

When the American comedy team known as The Three Stooges came together in 1925, they were doing stooging for stage and vaudeville comedian Ted Healy. The team consisted of Healy's lifelong friend Moe Howard, who'd unsuccessfully pursued a dramatic acting career in his youth; Moe's brother Shemp, who'd previously teamed with his sibling in a fifth-rate blackface act; and Larry Fine, fresh from a vaudeville turn in which he played the violin while doing a Russian dance. Healy preferred his stooges short, stupid-looking and adorned with bizarre hairstyles — Moe, Shemp and Larry fit the first two qualifications naturally, meeting the third requirement by having Moe wear a Beatles-style trim, Shemp an unkempt mop of hair split down the middle, and Larry a frizzy Einstein-like hairdo
